Skincare - a reality check!

Let’s take a moment to talk about your skin. That fragile thing that makes up around 12% of our body weight. And is sometimes sorely neglected. Talking about skin care is a little bit of a passion of mine!

Our skin has so many important functions which are overlooked, it is our main sensory organ for sensation like temperature, pressure, touch and pain. Absorption of creams and

essential oils, as well as medications. It provides protection, if it absorbs too much UV light and skin will protect itself by producing a pigmentation (seen to us as a tan) this pigmentation is called melanin. Vitamin D is absorbed through the skin to help the body produce strong bones and good eyesight.

The skin also excretes waste products and nasties that we don’t want in our bodies via the sweat glands. It secretes sebum and sweat onto the skins surface to keep the skin soft and lubricated, thus preventing it from drying out. Who knew how important the skin on your body truly is!!

A daily skincare routine is essential, this includes knowing your true skin type (the skin you were born with!) Cleansing is essential to clean the pores, followed by toner to eliminate any traces of cleanser and dirt that may remain in the skins surface. Toner invigorates the skin and tightens it. Moisturisers ensure that the skin is smooth and supple. And creates a barrier between the elements and the surface of your skin. It is essential for protecting and replacing moisture.

During a professional treatment you have options where exfoliation is concerned. You can opt for a traditional exfoliation (which is readily available over the counter for home use) or use an enzyme peel which brings amazing results in my opinion. It’s very kind to the skin and far less harsh than a chemical peel. There is also dermaplaning, which removes all peach fuzz from your face along with dead skin cells – not a popular treatment though as in salons it requires the use of a blade. Safety blades are available for home use, but these are far less effective.

I now have a new exfoliation option coming shortly to the Studio, Microdermabrasion! This is a truly amazing treatment. To those who are conscious of the affects of ageing, have acne scarring or stretch marks, this is the exfoliation treatment for you. Not only does it eliminate dead skins, but it can reduce signs of all these skin conditions. I cannot claim to eliminate them, but it can significantly reduce them.

Your skin is affected by so many things daily, and it is a passion of mine to help all look after your skin. You don’t get a second chance at this, so let’s work together to get it right now.
